Northampton town, not the county

This page is about the town itself. If you are booking from Kettering, Corby, Wellingborough, Daventry or Towcester, our Northamptonshire page covers those journeys and the rural driving they involve.

Northampton is about forty-five minutes from our base, so a booking here is quoted with the positioning run built in rather than added afterwards. It also means we prefer to know the full evening in advance, a pick-up, a wait and a return is straightforward; three separate trips across town on the same night is not, and we would rather tell you that at quote stage than on the night.

Getting a long vehicle around the town

The centre is manageable. The terraced streets are not. Abington, Kingsley, Semilong and Far Cotton are Victorian terraces with cars parked both sides, and a sixteen-seat stretch cannot turn in them or wait outside a door without blocking the road entirely. Where that applies we agree a collection point on the nearest through road, usually a matter of thirty seconds’ walk, and it is the difference between a relaxed departure and a driver reversing past twenty parked cars while everyone watches.

Where we take people

Market Square and the Bridge Street bars are the usual town-centre destinations for birthdays and hen nights. Beyond that: the Grosvenor Centre and Abington Street for daytime bookings, Franklin’s Gardens on match days, Delapré Abbey for weddings and the surrounding parkland for photographs, and Billing Aquadrome out at Great Billing. Groups also travel out to Milton Keynes and into Birmingham, both of which are a straight run on the M1.

Match days and event weekends

A Saints fixture at Franklin’s Gardens changes the traffic around the west of the town for a couple of hours either side, and we plan collection times around it rather than hoping. The same goes for anything filling the town centre on a Saturday. If your date coincides with a fixture, tell us when you enquire, we will build the extra time into the schedule instead of arriving late and apologising.

Roads and timings

Junctions 15, 15A and 16 of the M1 serve different sides of the town, and the A45 ring is usually the sensible way around rather than through the middle. For an evening booking we quote generously on the outward leg, because being early costs nothing and being late costs you the photographs.
